The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals (one of the most conservative courts in the country) UNANIMOUSLY upheld Federal Judge James Brady’s decision to overturn Albert Woodfox’s conviction.
What does this mean?!
This means we raise a fist and celebrate a tremendous victory in the Courts. This means that Albert can* come home. This means that a man deemed innocent in the eyes of the law is being unjustly held in solitary confinement by the State of Louisiana. This means we have some critical work ahead of us.
Take today to celebrate. As the character of the nation continues to wrestle with injustice, racism, and looming disasters like the weighing grand jury decision in Ferguson– pause– take in this moment of history wholly and holy, and pause. Gather the energy of this exceptional victory, and focus it towards insuring Albert Woodfox’s safe journey home. Like all meaningful struggles this can only be done together.
Humble, humble gratitude to all those who continue to struggle against injustice, the inhumane conditions of solitary confinement, wrongful convictions, the dismissal of personal transformation, and the climate of punishment in the United States. May we unite under the banner of impermeable justice. And of course thank you Herman– no doubt your courage, legacy, and spirit have had great influence on this decision.
Let’s bring him home family.
